Every English schoolchild reads Shakespeare. The immediate effect is one of incomprehension and annoyance. Each subsequent encounter is richer and more fulfilling. Theories abound that the sonnets weren’t even written by Shakespeare, and are for a young man. In any case, they are excellent.
